Ouagadougou: The director of the Institute of Environment and Agricultural Research (INERA), Drissa S©r©m©, has announced that improved seed varieties developed by the institute can enhance agricultural production by 30 to 40%.
According to Burkina Information Agency, Dr. S©r©m© emphasized the role of seed quality alongside rainfall in boosting agricultural yields. He noted that the seeds produced by INERA significantly contribute to this increase, marking a crucial advancement in agricultural practices. Dr. S©r©m© made these remarks during the launch of the 16th edition of the seed fair for improved plant varieties in Ouagadougou.
The director highlighted that these improved seed varieties are the result of extensive scientific research, designed to endure climatic challenges, diseases, and pests. The ongoing fair, which runs until June 2, 2025, at INERA's Gounghin district location, showcases various improved seeds, including cereals, protein oilseeds, cotton, fish and wildlife resources, and tubers.
Participants and exhibitors at the fair have come from thirteen regions of Burkina Faso, as well as from neighboring African countries such as Mali, Niger, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Chad.
