Burkina Faso Workshop Aims to Enhance New Law on Artists’ Status

Ouagadougou: The Minister of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism, Gilbert Pingdwind© Ou©draogo, inaugurated a workshop on Tuesday aimed at popularizing Law 04-2025, which outlines the status of artists in Burkina Faso. The workshop's objective is to gather feedback from stakeholders to aid in the development of the necessary implementing texts for the law.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the key aim of the workshop is to create a robust legal instrument that provides effective legal, social, and fiscal protection for artists and their collaborators. This initiative is expected to facilitate the growth of Burkinabe culture and arts. Minister Ou©draogo stressed the importance of establishing a clear regulatory framework and developing implementing decrees swiftly for the law's effective execution.

The minister also highlighted the need for awareness-raising and training among sector stakeholders, including artists, artistic collaborators, and cultural professionals, to ensure a comprehensive understanding of their rights and obligations. Moreover, mobilizing sufficient resources to support artists and cultural operators is considered essential in this new era.

Minister Ou©draogo urged all participants to adopt a collaborative approach to improve artists' living conditions. Moctar Sanfo, the Director General of Culture and Arts, emphasized the importance of exchanging ideas with stakeholders to share the law's content and gather contributions to address any shortcomings in the implementing acts set to be adopted soon.

The new law introduces several innovations, such as broadening its scope and addressing taxation issues to include artists' social security. It corrects the inadequacies found in the 2013 decree on artists' status and the two 2018 decrees related to the National Arts Commission and the professional artist card.
