Nairobi: German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has called for a strategic economic pivot towards Africa in response to recent threats from US President Donald Trump to impose new tariffs on Germany and other countries.According to Burkina Information Agency, Wadephul emphasized the untapped economic potential of Africa, describing it as a "continent of opportunity" for Germany. He noted that Germany has often lagged behind China in establishing economic ties with African nations, stressing the need for Germany to become more flexible and act swiftly to capitalize on opportunities in the region.During a meeting with Kenyan Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi in Nairobi, Wadephul reiterated the importance of diversifying Germany's economic partnerships in light of the US tariff policy. He stated that the looming tariff impositions serve as a clear indication for countries to broaden their economic horizons.Wadephul highlighted that the African continent holds significant potential for economic growth, which has been relatively underexplored by Germany, whose past focus has been mainly on North and Southern Africa. His visit to Kenya, accompanied by a large German business delegation of around 120 companies, underscores the intent to strengthen economic ties with Africa. The US tariff threat, announced by Trump on the Truth Social network, includes a 10% tariff on several European countries, including Germany, starting February 1, with a planned increase to 25% by June 1. The tariffs are tied to ongoing negotiations over the US's interest in acquiring Greenland.
