School Gardens to Enhance Local Canteens in Zanawa and Orkounou

Bougouriba: The High Commissioner of the province of Bougouriba, Amidou Konate, conducted a field visit to the primary schools of Zanawa and Orkounou as part of the pilot project aimed at promoting endogenous school canteens through the utilization of school gardens.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the visit was attended by the Provincial Director of Preschool, Primary and Non-Formal Education (DPEPPNF), Adelphe Mosse, Cheik Fousseni Ouattara, coordinator of the No-Biel association, local administrative authorities, community leaders, and educational communities. The project targets making schools self-sufficient regarding school food by developing 0.5-hectare school gardens equipped with solar-powered water pumping stations, storage basins, gardening tools, seeds, and technical training.

Mr. Ouattara mentioned that the pilot phase covers both Bougouriba and Ioba provinces, with schools selected based on water availability, garden existence, and community involvement. The gardens produce crops like corn and various vegetables to bolster school canteens. Issiaka Sory, head of the provincial plant production service, praised the condition of the sites while offering technical guidance.

The DPEPPNF appreciated the No-Biel association, highlighting the gardens as sources of nutritional improvement and educational tools. High Commissioner Amidou Konate expressed satisfaction with the facilities' quality and stakeholder commitment, aligning with Captain Ibrahim Traore's vision for educational resilience. He encouraged extending the project to other provincial schools.

The visit concluded positively, with hopes for the gardens to serve as sustainable tools for nutrition, learning, and autonomy for Bougouriba students.
