Ouagadougou: The Burkinabe Society of Neurosurgery is currently hosting its sixth congress in Ouagadougou, focusing on the theme "Optimizing neurosurgical care in a resource-limited country." This significant event, which takes place from February 5 to 7, 2026, is chaired by Ousmane Bougma, the President of the Transitional Legislative Assembly. The congress has attracted neurosurgeons from Mali, Niger, Italy, Ivory Coast, and other nations.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the congress aims to address crucial areas such as neuro-oncology, neurotraumatology, security challenges, and degenerative spinal pathologies. Dafidi David Lompo, representing the President of the Transitional Legislative Assembly, emphasized that the outcomes of this high-level gathering are expected to enhance healthcare services in Burkina Faso, the AES area, and other parts of the sub-region, given the shared realities of these populations.
Lompo highlighted the importance of these meetings, which serve as platforms for neurosurgery practitioners to exchange knowledge, thereby advancing the practice of brain and spinal cord surgery. Professor Abel Kabre, president of the Burkinabe Society of Neurosurgery, reiterated that the congress is a scientific exchange forum aimed at fostering the development of neurosurgery within and beyond Burkina Faso.
Professor Kabre noted that while neurosurgery was once limited to Ouagadougou, it is now available in several regions, contingent upon technical resources. He also mentioned that the congress, with its focus on surgical pathologies, included a preliminary workshop day on spinal surgery. This session was designed to strengthen the practical knowledge of young neurosurgeons and enhance the training of students, which is particularly vital given the high incidence of motorcycle accidents in the country leading to spinal injuries and paraplegia.
