Massive Seizure of Tapentadol Tablets Hidden in Biscuit Cartons Uncovered in Bobo-Dioulasso

Bobo-dioulasso: The Mobile Intervention Unit (UMI) has seized an extraordinary haul of 1,502,400 Tapentadol tablets hidden within a shipment of biscuit cartons. This significant seizure was part of "Operation Freekot," conducted from January 26 to February 20, 2026, targeting illegal drug trafficking and aiming to prevent these dangerous opioids from reaching the national market.According to Burkina Information Agency, Tapentadol is a synthetic opioid prescribed for severe pain and poses significant risks, including addiction and respiratory depression, when used outside a medical context. The vast quantity of tablets seized suggests an attempt to fuel the illegal drug trade, potentially endangering the nation's youth by increasing the prevalence of addiction. The operation revealed the deceptive strategy of concealing dangerous substances within everyday consumer products, aiming to normalize and facilitate the spread of illegal drugs. The intercepted cargo, located near Bobo-Dioulasso, was promptly secur ed and escorted to its destination by the Customs Security Unit due to the sensitivity of the contents. In a related crackdown, the Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DST) discovered other hazardous trafficking activities. The operation led to the seizure of 140 bags of cyanide concealed within clinker shipments, as well as 6,374 cartons containing 92,688 liters of counterfeit motor oil branded as Total and Shell. These fake products pose serious risks to engine performance and road safety.Additionally, authorities confiscated over 10 tonnes of smuggled sugar, which undermines the formal economy and reduces state revenues. The cumulative value of these seized goods underscores the magnitude of the threat posed by such illicit activities. These operations highlight the broader implications of fraud beyond financial losses, affecting public health, safety, and economic stability. During a press conference on February 24, 2026, Director General of Customs, Inseparate Directorate Yves KAFANDO, commended the officers for their dedication and professionalism. He emphasized the importance of protecting the public and warned importers against using the national economic space for dangerous trafficking, promising severe penalties for violations.Through the vigilance of the UMI and the DST, these operations have successfully thwarted attempts to introduce harmful substances and counterfeit products into Burkina Faso, reinforcing the country's commitment to safeguarding its youth and economic interests.
