Ouagadougou: The Burkinabe government adopted a decree on Thursday in the Council of Ministers, extending the development period for residential plots from 5 to 8 years, as part of a new approach to managing national land.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the decree aims to strengthen the rigorous and transparent management of land in Burkina Faso. One of its key measures is to adjust the development timeline for residential plots, acknowledging the socio-economic realities faced by the population and encouraging plot beneficiaries to effectively develop their land.
The decree outlines procedures for managing national land to ensure effective protection of the land domain and achieve better consistency in the interventions of State services. A significant innovation introduced by this decree is the requirement for the completeness of the land transfer file to local authorities, aiming to better regulate administrative procedures and enhance transparency in land allocation.
Furthermore, the decree provides for improved regulation of land delegation and concession mechanisms to prevent irregular practices and promote more efficient management of national land assets. It serves as an implementing decree for Law No. 015-2025/ALT of October 21, 2025, concerning agrarian and land reorganization in Burkina Faso, and it strengthens the legal framework for the amicable transfer of land rights to secure transactions and reduce conflicts related to land ownership.
According to the government, the adoption of this decree will contribute to improving land governance in Burkina Faso by ensuring more rigorous and transparent management of the national land domain. It is also expected to preserve the public domain and ensure better coordination of interventions by various state services involved in land management.
