Gurikino/Pala University Hospital: The ARSN Inspects Radiotherapy Equipment

Guiriko: The National Authority for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (ARSN) conducted an inspection of the radiotherapy equipment at the Pala University Hospital (CHU) in Bobo-Dioulasso. The equipment is installed at the Dafra Medical Center with Surgical Unit (CMA). The inspection aimed to ensure that the radiological installations comply with radiation protection, safety, and nuclear security requirements.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the radiotherapy center at the Pala University Hospital was inaugurated on December 24, 2025, reflecting the Burkinabe authorities' commitment to improving healthcare services, particularly in cancer treatment. The use of ionizing radiation requires adherence to strict standards before commissioning the equipment.

The ARSN, known as the French National Radiological Protection Agency, conducted the inspection to verify compliance with radiation protection regulations for workers, patients, and the public. The agency also sought to ensure that staff qualifications and skills met quality and safety standards through quality assurance programs, treatment protocols, quality control records, dosimetry reports, and incident management mechanisms.

The inspection aimed to identify and correct any deficiencies or deviations. Belko Massi Barry, Director General of ARSN, emphasized the importance of this operation before granting operating authorization, stating, "This is a pre-authorization inspection to guarantee compliance with radiation protection requirements for workers, patients, and the public."

The inspection was conducted in collaboration with the management of Pala University Hospital, focusing on examining technical equipment and work areas to ensure a safe environment for future users. Ounanlini Thiombiano, director general of the hospital, expressed his support for the inspection, calling it a decisive step towards operational readiness and patient relief.

Following the inspection, ARSN inspectors concluded that essential radiation protection functions for workers, patients, and the public were fully guaranteed according to national regulations. The radiotherapy center in Pala is expected to become operational in the coming days, providing a new treatment option for patients.

The ARSN is the national body responsible for regulating radiation protection, nuclear safety, and security. It operates across various sectors using ionizing radiation, including mining, construction, nuclear power, and health, as well as controlling non-ionizing radiation sources like telecommunications and high-voltage power lines.
