Ouagadougou: The High Commissioner of the Kourittenga province, Moctar Ilboudo, presided over the ceremony celebrating Nelson Mandela International Day on Saturday, July 18, 2026, in Koupla. The event, which was held under the theme "Contribution of agricultural penitentiary centers to the professional training of prisoners and to food self-sufficiency: challenges and perspectives," focused on the reintegration of prisoners into society.
According to Burkina Information Agency, this international Nelson Mandela Day was sponsored by His Majesty Koadin Naaba. Installation kits were distributed to beneficiaries who received training in traditional trades such as loincloth weaving, metalwork, and woodworking. These initiatives aim to facilitate the integration of prisoners who have completed their sentences into the workforce. Certificates of recognition were also awarded to individuals and partners committed to improving prisoners' living conditions.
The residents' representative, SJ, expressed gratitude for the efforts made on behalf of the prisoners. He highlighted the challenges faced by the establishment, including recurring electricity issues, outdated equipment causing frequent water tower breakdowns, and a lack of vehicles for social and health services. SJ emphasized the importance of having a vehicle to enable field trips, strengthen family ties, and ensure proper medical follow-up. He called for support from NGOs and people of goodwill to assist detainees post-vocational training.
SJ also advocated for the accommodation of trained prisoners in public and private facilities through prison authorities. He urged judicial authorities to expand community service opportunities and called upon customary and religious leaders to support prisoners. Additionally, he requested a reduction in certain sentences and fixed fines.
According to the director of the Koupla detention and correction house, Boureima Nikiema, Nelson Mandela Day serves as a powerful symbol of prison humanization. He emphasized that the day reflects Nelson Mandela's vision of respecting the dignity of detainees, empowering them, and facilitating their social reintegration. Nikiema noted that MACK, with support from partners Enabel and OCADES, established workshops in sewing, carpentry, welding, and weaving to provide professional skills to detainees.
The director of MACK outlined the main challenge as the exploitation of the Doubguin agricultural penitentiary center to boost agricultural production, instill work ethics, and equip prisoners with useful skills post-release. The development of this agricultural site was financed by their partner Enabel.
Addressing the detainees, Moctar Ilboudo, the High Commissioner of Kourittenga province, encouraged them to seize the opportunities provided. "The efforts made by the State and its partners on your behalf demonstrate the confidence placed in your ability to change and rebuild your future. Take full advantage of the opportunities offered to you," he stated.
Wong Sougr Naaba Siguiri Douni Ya Sougri of Ndogo also contributed to the Faso Mªbo initiative by donating 150,000 CFA francs.
