Koudougou: The Nando region officially launched the very first National Vector Control Days (JNLAV) on Saturday in Koudougou, AIB observed on site.

According to Burkina Information Agency, this major initiative, chaired by the governor of the region, Adama Jean Yves Br, aims to sustainably reduce the vector density of malaria with the goal of eliminating the disease by 2030. Despite the efforts made through the distribution of insecticide-treated bed nets, seasonal malaria chemoprevention, and medical care, malaria remains a significant public health issue in Burkina Faso, being the leading cause of medical consultations, hospitalizations, and deaths, particularly affecting children under five and pregnant women.

The Chief Medical Officer of the district of Koudougou, Dr. Fatimata Hi, representing the regional health director of Nando, highlighted that stagnant water, blocked gutters, and used tires contribute to the proliferation of Anopheles mosquitoes. Health and administrative authorities are focusing on preventive and multi-sectoral actions to tackle this situation.

During the official launch, Governor Adama Jean Yves Br emphasized that this national initiative is organized around seven strategic components: entomological surveillance, community mobilization, management of used tires, environmental sanitation through cleaning of gutters, targeted spatial spraying, rigorous coordination, and ongoing advocacy. The ceremony received blessings from traditional dignitaries, with Naaba Baongo, chief of Dapoya, present.

Scheduled for August 8-9, 2026, this first of four editions planned between August and November aims to mobilize all the region's stakeholders. The governor called upon local authorities, technical services, civil society organizations, and citizens to fully commit to ensuring that every household becomes an active participant in public health and sanitation.
