Ouagadougou: The Tuy province belatedly commemorated the 8th National Tree Day (JNA) on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, in Koumbia, with the planting of 500 saplings in the communal grove. The ceremony also marked the official launch of the reforestation campaign in the Tuy province.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the event, themed "My Institution, My Grove," saw participation from administrative, municipal, and traditional authorities, as well as residents from across the province. Nebila Paulin Bationo, the provincial director of Water and Forests for Tuy, noted that the seedlings planted were primarily Vachellia nilotica, Adansonia digitata (baobab), and Khaya senegalensis (African mahogany).

He detailed that the Koumbia communal grove spans approximately five hectares and is designated for reforestation efforts to enhance vegetation cover. Issiaka Segda, the High Commissioner of Tuy, highlighted the significance of trees in addressing the environmental challenges the province faces.

"I invite technical services, local authorities, heads of institutions, civil society organizations, partners, and above all the people to pay particular attention to the maintenance, protection, and monitoring of the plants that have been planted," Segda stated.

The High Commissioner also encouraged institutions to develop green spaces and create groves, urging the population to become the "first guardians" of the communal grove.

Boukary Zono, president of the special municipal delegation of Koumbia, assured that with the support of the people, the municipality will ensure the protection and maintenance of the grove and the newly planted trees.
