Tuy: The people of Douro are harvesting the first cowpeas from the school field. Residents of the village of Douro, in the commune of Brba, mobilized on Sunday, September 13, 2026, for the first cowpea harvest from the field belonging to the village's public primary school. More than 130 people, including men, women, and young people, participated in the harvest.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the school field is in its second year of production. This year, its area has been increased to 7.5 hectares. It includes 1.5 hectares of cowpeas, 1.5 hectares of cotton, 1.5 hectares of peanuts, and 3 hectares of maize. For the president of the school council, Arouna Oudraogo, the community's mobilization reflects its commitment to supporting the initiatives of the President of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traor. According to him, the school grounds contribute to feeding the local canteen. They also constitute a source of income that can help the school council carry out certain activities.
The president of the Douro Village Development Committee (CVD), Ali Ramd, welcomed this initiative. He indicated that the people of Douro have been experiencing the benefits of the village school's field since last year (2025). "I urge everyone to follow suit, because it's truly a good thing," he added.
The school's director, Hamidou Bagayogo, stated that the activity falls within the framework of the Presidential Initiative for Quality Education. He explained that the school's activities help support the canteen, thereby providing students with better learning conditions. The women's representative, Minata Kadiogo, also praised the community's mobilization. "We know that if our children eat well at school, they will study well," she said. Fifth-grade student Rahinata Oudraogo said she was happy to participate in the harvest. "It will allow us to eat well and learn our lessons well," she explained. The work concluded with a community meal at midday, provided by the Association of Former Students of Douro Living Outside the Village.
According to Kienbialaf¨ Traor, Head of the Basic Education District (CEB), reforms are underway in Brba. He stated that 31 out of 33 educational institutions have, to date, established school fields, with various crop types, on nearly 40 hectares of cultivated land.
