Burkina Faso Sees Dramatic Increase in Helmet Use and Security Control

Ouagadougou:The helmet-wearing rate across Burkina Faso surged from 8.7% in 2022 to over 95% in 2026, as revealed by Security Minister Mahamadou Sana during a government exhibition dedicated to his department's achievements.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the minister highlighted that the control over the national territory improved significantly, rising from 37.88% in 2022 to 74.53% by July 2026.

During his address on October 2, 2026, at the National Days of Patriotic Commitment and Citizen Participation (JEPPC), Sana recalled previous traffic restrictions caused by security issues on major national roads. The RN1, RN3, and RN5 roads experienced significant disruptions due to security threats.

Sana emphasized the historical challenges in combating terrorism and highlighted the exceptional recruitment efforts between 2022 and 2026, which improved the ratio of security officers to the population from one officer per 648 inhabitants in 2021 to one per 537 in 2026.

He also discussed the redistribution of responsibilities between the National Police and National Gendarmerie and noted that in 2022, 156 out of 351 communes lacked internal security coverage.

Regarding governance, the minister announced ongoing internal operations to fight corruption and racketeering within the security forces. Looking forward, the department aims to focus on preventive and community-based security, enhancing urban security, and encouraging citizen involvement.

The JEPPC 2026, running from October 2nd to 9th, features a government exhibition at the Ouagadougou International Arts and Crafts Fair, showcasing the actions and results of public institutions under the theme "All for Made in Burkina Faso let's make every purchase an act of sovereignty."
