Kadiogo:Nearly 3,200 drivers of two- and three-wheeled vehicles were checked for not wearing helmets in Kadiogo over a span of three days, according to an announcement by the regional director of the National Police, Police Controller General Aguima Abdoulaziz Yonly. He also revealed plans for an upcoming operation called 'Double Head Shield,' which will extend helmet checks to passengers as well.
According to Burkina Information Agency, during a field visit to observe helmet compliance, Abdoulaziz Yonly emphasized the National Police's commitment to continuing enforcement and control operations. While the focus has been on drivers, awareness campaigns are also targeting passengers who do not wear helmets.
A report from the Ouagadougou Central Police Station (CCPO) indicated that 3,175 motorists were stopped for not wearing helmets between Thursday and Saturday. Of these, 1,601 offenders received fines and were allowed to retrieve their vehicles after presenting a helmet, while 1,574 vehicles were impounded. The fixed fines issued during this period totaled 6,185,000 FCFA.
The number of offenders on the first day was 2,062, which decreased to 589 on the second day and 524 on the third day. This reduction, according to the police official, signifies a growing awareness among road users.
Inspector General Aguima Abdoulaziz Yonly noted that nearly 95% of road users with two or three-wheeled vehicles now wear helmets. He welcomed this progress but urged the public to continue adhering to the helmet-wearing measure. He stressed the importance of wearing safety helmets for personal protection, civic responsibility, and patriotism.
The police also highlighted the necessity of wearing helmets correctly, with a reminder to fasten them properly. There are still cases where users wear helmets without fastening them or merely carry them on their vehicles.
The National Police aims to achieve widespread compliance with helmet-wearing regulations to help reduce traffic accident-related fatalities.
