Toma:Nayala The people of Toma celebrated Woudizon, the traditional festival marking the new millet harvest, on Sunday, October 25, 2026. The event was characterized by an atmosphere of sharing, traditional wrestling, and reunions, highlighting cultural values and social cohesion in the Nayala province.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the day commenced around noon with a meal hosted by the canton chief of Toma for administrative authorities, heads of services, traditional chiefs, religious leaders, and dignitaries. Among the participants were the chiefs of the villages of Koin, Tô, and Kisson, who gathered for this fraternal event at the canton chief's residence.
Hilaire Lawamango Somôzena Ky, the Douti of Kisson and nephew of the canton chief of Toma, expressed appreciation for the initiative and wished the canton chief good health and longevity. He emphasized the historical significance of the Woudizon festival, which predates the arrival of missionaries, and called for the preservation of peace, social cohesion, and cultural values. He also encouraged the community to engage in local development efforts.
The meal, blessed by Father Jean Paul Soro, featured local dishes such as "Sinmouni," a meatball, and was followed by expressions of gratitude from the canton chief to the attendees. In the afternoon, the celebrations moved to the traditional wrestling arena at the CELPAC center in Toma, where young wrestlers demonstrated their skills amid cheering crowds.
The wrestling matches concluded around 6 p.m., but the festivities continued in cabarets, bars, and homes. This year's Woudizon festival served as a platform for community gathering, with hopes that the tradition will continue to reinforce social bonds and cultural heritage transmission in Nayala.
