Switzerland reiterated the importance of Morocco's serious and credible efforts aimed at a political solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue, based on compromise, "positively" welcoming the autonomy plan in the process for resolving this issue.
This position was expressed on Friday in Rabat by the Swiss Federal Councillor, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Ignazio Cassis, on a working visit to the Kingdom, during a press briefing held at the end of his talks. with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Nasser Bourita.
“Switzerland recognizes and reiterates the importance of the serious and credible efforts Morocco is making to find a political and peaceful solution based on compromise,” he said.
Referring to the autonomy plan, presented by Morocco to the General Secretariat of the United Nations on April 11, 2007, Mr. Cassis affirmed that “this initiative is a positive point in the process and we are going to do everything in our possession to facilitate a favorable solution”.
"It is time for this issue to be resolved and for it to find a solution, because this crisis has been going on for too long," said the head of Swiss diplomacy.
He also indicated that Switzerland supports the efforts of the United Nations and the central role that it plays in the process concerning the Sahara issue and that it supports a political solution in accordance with international law and the resolutions of the Council. of security.
"I believe that we must find an agreement with the representative of the United Nations which can bring the process to a successful conclusion with flexibility on the part of everyone", he said in this regard.
