Genetically modified mosquitoes in Burkina Faso: A coalition of organizations demands an immediate end to experiments

Bobo-Dioulasso: The Coalition for Health Sovereignty (CO.SOU.SA) held a press conference on Saturday March 9, 2024 in Bobo-Dioulasso, to denounce the ongoing experiments on genetically modified mosquitoes. 'Stop experimenting with genetically modified mosquitoes. We are not guinea pigs!', could we read on the poster of the press conference organized by the Coalition for Health Sovereignty (CO.SOU.SA), on Saturday March 9, 2024 in Bobo-Dioulasso. Indeed, the coalition demands an immediate halt to the experiments implemented by the Target Malaria project in Bobo-Dioulasso. To do this, it calls for the establishment of a moratorium on genetically modified organisms in Burkina Faso and the promotion and generalization of agroecological practices which are respectful of the environment, human and animal health through the implementation away from chemical fertilizers and synthetic pesticides. According to the spokesperson for the coalition, Nestor Podassé, these current experiments have no objective of fighting ag ainst malaria as those behind them try to make people believe. 'The genetic modification of mosquitoes, and ultimately, gene forcing which is the ultimate step sought will allow international firms, in particular those led by Bill Gates, to develop biotechnologies dangerous for the food and health sovereignty of populations, in particular African countries,' he argued in his opening statement. Nestor Podassé and his comrades believe that the experiments carried out in Burkina Faso by the Target Malaria project are not in line with the legislation, in this case Law No. 064-2012/AN of December 20, 2012 on the safety regime in of biotechnology. According to the president of Terre à vie, member of the coalition, Ali Tapsoba de Goamma, the release of mosquitoes should not be done without the consent of the entire population since, he said, mosquitoes can travel . 'It's scientific terrorism because if the enemy decides to harm us, he can use mosquitoes to send us diseases,' he said. What alternative do you propose to fight malaria? To this question, the president of Terre à vie answers: 'For us, it is simply the implementation of a good hygiene and sanitation policy by involving local communities.'Source: Burkina Information Agency
