Koudougou: The Center-West region officially launched its marketing campaign for sugar from the New Como© Sugar Company (SN-SOSUCO) at reduced prices of 675 CFA francs per bag of granulated sugar and 825 CFA francs per 1 kg packet of lump sugar, AIB noted. This event, focused on endogenous development and industrial resilience, is part of Burkina Faso's economic strategy.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the launch aligns with a period of high demand, coinciding with the Muslim and Christian fasting periods. The region's interim governor, Adama Jean Yves B©r©, highlighted the initiative's aim to honor Burkinabe people who choose local consumption, echoing the vision of the authorities: "to produce what we consume and consume what we produce."
The campaign's primary objective is to ensure the availability of locally produced sugar throughout Burkina Faso at affordable prices. The pricing strategy includes a 1 kg packet of lump sugar at 825 CFA francs and a 1 kg bag of granulated sugar at 675 CFA francs. To promote fair distribution, individuals are limited to purchasing 5 packets of lump sugar and 5 sachets of granulated sugar.
A special point of sale has been established within the Regional Directorate of Industry, Commerce and Crafts of the Centre-West, in Koudougou. The regional director of trade, Sou Si©bou, stated that 34 tons of sugar are available, equally divided between lump and granulated sugar. Proof of identity is required to ensure widespread access.
The governor praised SN-SOSUCO's efforts to meet the population's needs despite various challenges, and reaffirmed government support for the company, which is vital to the local economy with over 3,000 jobs created. With national sugar consumption at 300,000 tonnes annually, of which only 10% is locally produced, enhancing SN-SOSUCO's capacity is a priority, with plans for recovery and development underway.
The launch has been positively received by the population, viewing it as an opportunity to access an essential commodity at an affordable price while supporting the national economy.
