BRUSSELS, The Belgian Minister of Justice, Vincent Van Quickenborn, resigned due to the attack on October 16 in Brussels. This was reported by the VRT television channel.
The terrorist attack left two people dead and one injured.
In his statement released Friday, Vincent Van Quickenborn called what happened a huge, inexcusable personal mistake. “I assume political responsibility and I resign,” he said. His resignation request must be examined by Prime Minister Alexander De Croo.
On October 16, two supporters of the Swedish national football team were shot dead in the Belgian capital, another person was seriously injured, the perpetrator of the attack fled. The police published a portrait of the suspect, specifying that he was a man of Tunisian origin, aged 45, living in Belgium illegally, known to the police for his radical opinions and having been tried in Tunisia for offenses related to terrorism. He then recorded a video in which he claimed to belong to the Islamic State terrorist group* and “avenge Muslims” by killing Swedes. On Tuesday morning, the suspect was seriously injured by police during an arrest in a Brussels café and died in intensive care.
*On December 29, 2014, the Russian Supreme Court recognized the Islamic State (IS or Daesh, until 2014, Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) as a terrorist organization. Its activities are banned in Russia.
