Boulgou: The High Commissioner of the Boulgou province, Dom¨gb¨gui¨re Constantin Dabir e, visited the pilot wheat production site in Bidiga, in the commune of Tenkodogo. The outing was marked by the official launch of the wheat harvest, a step that consecrates the introduction of this crop in the Boulgou province and is part of the national dynamic of agricultural diversification and food sovereignty.
According to Burkina Information Agency, long known as a rice-growing plain, the Bidiga area now hosts a site dedicated to wheat production. On a five-hectare plot, 47 producers have committed to experimenting with and developing this crop. During the visit, the provincial authority noted the progress of the plots and spoke with the producers as well as with the technical services responsible for supervision.
The operators have adopted the recommended technical approaches, particularly in terms of sowing, maintenance, and phytosanitary monitoring. The introduction of wheat to Bidiga aims to broaden local production bases and reduce dependence on cereal imports. It also contributes to the enhancement of existing infrastructure through crop diversification adapted to the site's potential.
Addressing the producers, High Commissioner Constantin Dabir e reiterated that mastering strategic crops is a major challenge for national food security. He encouraged farmers to continue their efforts and to adhere to technical recommendations in order to improve yields. He also called on the relevant services to maintain close support, an essential condition for consolidating achievements and preparing for future campaigns.
The visit concluded with the symbolic cutting of the first sheaves of wheat. This gesture marks the transition from the introductory phase to that of actual production. For provincial authorities, this first harvest opens up prospects for expanding cultivated areas and strengthening producers' capacities. It demonstrates the local commitment to contributing to the national effort for diversified and productive agriculture.
By engaging in wheat cultivation, Bidiga confirms its position as a new agricultural hub in the Boulgou province and participates in consolidating food sovereignty in Burkina Faso.
