Johannesburg: Burkina Faso ranks first in Francophone Africa, second in Africa, and fifth worldwide for the availability of human resources for health (HRH) data, according to results presented at the 2026 HRH Annual Technical Review and Planning Meeting, held from August 17 to 21 in Johannesburg, South Africa. During the meeting, the country received a certificate of recognition from the World Health Organization Regional Office for Africa (WHO AFRO) for its performance in this critical area.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Burkina Faso's score for the availability of data on health personnel has increased from 89% to 93%. This improvement was higduring the technical meeting, emphasizing the country's commitment to enhancing the collection, consolidation, and availability of health personnel information.

Burkina Faso was represented at the Johannesburg meeting by the Director of Human Resources of the Ministry of Health, Comrade Mamadou Traor. The recognition reflects the country's efforts to improve data collection processes concerning health personnel, which is a strategic tool for understanding workforce distribution and healthcare system needs. This data supports informed decision-making regarding recruitment, training, specialization, assignment, and staff mobility, aligning resources with the population's needs.

The challenge for Burkina Faso is now to consolidate these gains, maintain data updates, and strengthen its use in decision-making. The Johannesburg meeting also provided Burkina Faso the opportunity to share its experiences with other African nations, encouraging the Ministry of Health to continue its progress in acquiring reliable data to improve human resources planning and care provision sustainably.
