Ouagadougou: In a strategic move to enhance agricultural productivity and achieve food self-sufficiency, Burkina Faso is set to receive a significant influx of agricultural equipment by 2026. The initiative, part of the Presidential Initiative for Agricultural Production and Food Self-Sufficiency (IP-3A), aims to transform the agricultural sector through the introduction of modern machinery and technology.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the Burkinabe government announced plans to acquire a variety of equipment to support this initiative. The list includes 6 large capacity drilling rigs, 100 40-horsepower tractors, 80 seed drills, 120 small harvesters, and 120 motorized cultivators. Additionally, the government plans to introduce 250 two-wheeled vehicles, eight trucks, 400 motor pumps, two multi-functional tractors, 12 threshers, and 12 balers, all expected to arrive by 2026.
The Minister of State in charge of Agriculture, Commander Isma«l Sombie, highlighted that these acquisitions are crucial for boosting agricultural production. The planned equipment will support farmers in increasing their output and improving the efficiency of their farming practices.
This initiative comes on the heels of a report from the Ministry of Agriculture, which estimates cereal production in 2025 to reach 7,142,484 tonnes, marking a 17.63% increase from the previous agricultural season. The crop harvest rate is projected to be around 84%, reflecting significant growth in the sector. The government's commitment to expanding agricultural capabilities through the acquisition of advanced equipment is seen as a vital step towards ensuring food security and supporting economic development in Burkina Faso.
