Ouagadougou: The patient who received a kidney transplant at the Tengandogo University Hospital (CHU) was discharged from the hospital on Thursday, August 14, 2025, the CHU's communications department announced. On Tuesday, July 29, 2025, a Burkinabe-Turkish medical team successfully performed the very first kidney transplant in Burkina Faso on a 43-year-old patient at the Tengandogo University Hospital.
According to Burkina Information Agency, two weeks after the operation, the patient was able to return home. Burkina Faso has thus reached an important and historic milestone in the care of patients suffering from kidney disease. The patient's doctors confirmed that her health is satisfactory. However, she will remain under regular medical supervision, in accordance with a well-established protocol.
"This is one of the happiest moments of my life. I owe this new chance at life to the highest authorities in the country, to the medical team, and to all the people who helped give me hope," the patient said upon leaving the hospital. This medical feat opens up new therapeutic perspectives for patients suffering from end-stage chronic renal failure.
It was made possible thanks to the political will of the Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traor©, to work for the health sovereignty of Burkina Faso.
