Governor Babo Pierre Bassinga Launches Heritage Month in Douroula, Emphasizes Cultural Preservation

Mouhoun: The Governor of the Bankui region, Babo Pierre Bassinga, presided over the regional launch of Burkina Faso's Heritage Month in Douroula, Mouhoun Province. The event, which took place on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, coincided with the fifth stage of the rotating national flag-raising ceremony. Governor Bassinga called upon the population to safeguard and transmit cultural values to future generations.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the regional launch ceremony was held under the theme "Heritage and cultural diversity, commitment and responsibility of stakeholders". It witnessed the participation of administrative, customary, and local authorities. The ceremony was marked by the raising of the national colours, the presentation of donations, a tree planting at the prefecture, and a visit to cultural sites and memorial spaces in the municipality.

The event commenced with the national anthem performed in the Dioula language. Souare Soumana, the representative of the canton chief, commended the mobilization of the authorities and expressed gratitude for efforts toward stability in the locality. Maxime Y. Bakouan, the President of the special delegation of Douroula, emphasized the importance placed by national authorities on cultural heritage preservation.

Governor Bassinga relayed a message from the Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traore, highlighting the need to protect cultural heritage, promote tourist sites, and pass on indigenous knowledge. He urged the population to adhere to these values and engage in their preservation, while also calling for unity in light of the security context.

The ceremony included the distribution of 250 mats donated by the NGO ASMAD to vulnerable people and the planting of trees. The delegation visited the municipal museum, the mausoleum of Sidi Karantao, a 19th-century spiritual figure, and the nearly four-century-old great mosque of Douroula. These visits underscored the richness of the local cultural heritage, as explained by guides and notables.

Concluding the ceremony, Governor Bassinga urged the people to preserve and transmit cultural values to future generations and encouraged them to combat all forms of acculturation.
