Sandbondtenga:The Minister of State for Agriculture, Water, Animal, and Fisheries Resources, Commander Isma«l Sombi, praised the resilience and innovative efforts of the populations in Forgui and Koalma during a visit to monitor the 2026-2027 agropastoral and fisheries campaign.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the minister visited a 30-hectare rice-growing lowland in Forgui, Boussouma, cultivated by 330 producers, of which 225 are women. They anticipate a production of nearly 100 tons of rice. To counter drought conditions, the producers, aided by agricultural services, have established a supplementary irrigation system using the nearby watercourse.

In Koalma, Pissila, Commander Sombi observed a newly developed 35-hectare lowland utilized by 652 producers, including 447 women, marking a first-time rice-growing effort for resettled populations. The initiative aims to boost food production and capitalize on the land's potential.

Producers in both Forgui and Koalma have requested improved water access to secure their agricultural activities. The Minister welcomed their resilience, highlighting their ability to innovate and turn challenges into opportunities. He announced that the State would support the completion of boreholes to improve water availability.

Additionally, Commander Sombi launched the "Paaspanga" fortified food processing unit in Korsimoro and commissioned a new drinking water supply system as part of the Water Supply and Sanitation Program, with a capacity for 15,000 inhabitants.

The mission ended in Kaya with discussions between the minister and rural stakeholders, focusing on food sovereignty initiatives promoted by the Burkinabe authorities.
