Mouhoun/Land Management: Municipality of Tch©riba Halts Unauthorized Land Subdivision Operation

Mouhoun: The President of the special delegation (PDS) of the municipality of Tch©riba, Ouesseni Logora, spearheaded a land control operation on Thursday, June 25, 2026, leading to the dismantling of an illegal land subdivision site on the outskirts of the city. This action was in accordance with the regulations governing land and real estate development in Burkina Faso.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the intervention was prompted by reports received by municipal services about a suspected illegal subdivision operation on a two-hectare plot located west of Tch©riba, near National Route No. 14. Investigations by the land and property affairs department, led by Sibiri Bay©, revealed that the landowner, after purchasing the land from customary holders, allegedly subdivided it into several plots for sale without obtaining the necessary authorizations required by existing regulations.

To halt this unauthorized activity, Ouesseni Logora, alongside the head of the land and property affairs department, municipal police, national gendarmerie, and Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP), visited the site. They discovered over a dozen marked plots, some already involved in transactions.

Mr. Bay© emphasized that Burkina Faso's Law No. 015-2025/ALT on Agrarian and Land Reorganization and Law No. 008-2023/ALT on Real Estate Promotion impose strict regulations on land development operations for sale. "Any subdivision, restructuring, or urban redevelopment operation for commercial purposes requires legal approval. No such authorization has been presented to the municipality," he stated.

In response, the municipal authorities removed the markers from the site, pending further administrative and legal proceedings. The PDS highlighted that this initiative aims to enforce regulations and educate the public about the risks of irregular land transactions. He stressed the importance of adhering to laws governing land ownership to avoid financial losses and potential scams.

Additionally, the municipal authority urged landowners to act responsibly in land transfers and advised buyers to verify the compliance of land transactions before proceeding. Relevant authorities have been informed to determine accountability and restore order in this critical area.
