Newborn Baby Abandoned in Tiankoura Latrine Dies After Rescue Effort

Boulgou a newborn baby:oulgou A newborn baby, abandoned in a latrine on the night of Tuesday, February 17, 2026, in Tiankoura, a town located 25 km south of Diebougou, succumbed to its injuries after being evacuated to the Medical Center with surgical unit (CMA) of Diebougou, AIB learned from local sources.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the discovery occurred around 7 p.m. when a student, heading to the latrine to wash, heard cries emanating from the pit. Upon investigation, the presence of an infant was confirmed, leading to immediate action.

A response team comprising the Tiankoura National Police and Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP) was dispatched to the site. They demolished the latrine to rescue the child.

The baby, initially found alive, was extracted and urgently transported to the Tiankoura Health and Social Promotion Centre (CSPS) for initial medical attention.

Medical staff reported that the infant had sustained a head injury and was experiencing feeding difficulties. Due to the critical nature of the injuries, the newborn was referred to the Diebougou Medical Center for more comprehensive care. Tragically, despite efforts, the child did not survive.

Authorities identified the presumed mother, who was provided with medical care before being detained for investigation purposes.

The public prosecutor at the Diebougou High Court was informed, prompting the initiation of an investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding this incident and to determine accountability.
