Ouahigouya: The patient whose head was successfully treated by a medical team from the Ouahigouya Hospital has regained consciousness and is now communicating with those around her, AIB learned from the hospital on Saturday.
According to Burkina Information Agency, on May 22, 2025, at approximately 8 p.m., a woman was admitted to the emergency room of the Ouahigouya Regional Hospital Center after being assaulted with a pickaxe embedded in both sides of her skull. The complex operation, led by Dr. WS PScome Yam©ogo, commenced at 10 p.m. and concluded around 3 a.m., with the patient leaving the operating room around 4 a.m.
"The patient has regained consciousness and is interacting with people around her," AIB learned on Saturday from a member of the medical team. The successful outcome has been attributed to the collaborative efforts of a surgical emergency team, which included specialists in neurosurgery, anesthesia-resuscitation, doctors in specialization (DES), medical students, health officers, hospital hygiene technicians, and nurses. The hospital also acknowledged the support from medical imaging, social action, and pharmacy services.
Medicine has progressed significantly in Burkina Faso, with many conditions that previously necessitated medical evacuations abroad now being treated locally. In a testament to this advancement, in April 2025, a surgical team from the CHU-Tengandogo in Ouagadougou successfully performed open heart surgeries on eight patients.
