Bishkek: Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed Moscow's solidarity with the Iranian people on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, praising their courage and resilience in defending their national interests. He also reaffirmed Russia's support for Tehran during this difficult period.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Vladimir Putin was speaking during a meeting with his Iranian counterpart, Massoud Pezechkian, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, held on August 31 and September 1, 2026 in Bishkek. "In Russia, we stand in solidarity with the Iranian people. We admire your courage and resilience in the struggle for your national interests," the Russian president said.

He assured that Moscow would continue to support Tehran by providing the necessary goods that Iran needs. The Russian President also conveyed to the Iranian President his greetings and his "words of sincere support" to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei.

Vladimir Putin also mentioned the ceasefire agreed in June between Iran and the United States, stating that this progress, welcomed by Moscow, remained fragile and unstable. For his part, Massoud Pezechkian thanked Russia for its support of Iran in international forums, during the conflict with the United States and in the face of American sanctions.

The Iranian President reaffirmed that his country was not responsible for the war with Washington and that Tehran prioritized diplomacy and negotiations to resolve disputes. He nevertheless stressed the need for guarantees to ensure compliance with any potential agreement. The two leaders emphasized the strategic nature of their relations and the need to strengthen their bilateral and multilateral cooperation within the SCO.

Vladimir Putin noted the continued development of Russian-Iranian relations in several areas, particularly trade. He also mentioned the free trade agreement between Iran and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
