Koudougou: Following the road control missions in the town of Koudougou, carried out by the regional directorate of the National Police of Nando (formerly Centre-Ouest), 69 unscrupulous users were arrested and mobilized for one day for community service.
According to Burkina Information Agency, these operations are part of efforts to strengthen road safety actions and raise awareness among road users. Despite various initiatives, there remains a persistent issue of road incivility in the city, highlighted by numerous cases of non-compliance with the highway code.
In the span of just two days, a total of sixty-nine road users, which included 44 motorcyclists, 28 cyclists, and 02 tricycle drivers, were apprehended for offenses such as non-compliance with traffic lights and using mobile phones while driving. Road incivility, which encompasses behaviors like dangerous overtaking, illegal parking, and drunk driving, poses a significant threat to road safety.
The arrested individuals were educated on the importance of adhering to the highway code and were required to complete community service under the supervision of officers from the Nando Regional Police Directorate and the City Hall's Hygiene Service. Their tasks included weeding, cleaning, and removing rubbish from the SONAPOST intersection to the traffic lights in front of Koudougou town hall.
Police Captain Henri Yameogo, head of the Regional Traffic and Road Safety Service, stated that these measures are part of a long-term strategy to address road indiscipline. He warned that future offenders could face community service periods of up to seven days.
At the conclusion of the community service, participants acknowledged their infractions and pledged not to reoffend. The city's police authorities reiterated their commitment to tackling road incivility and encouraged citizens to demonstrate civic-mindedness and responsibility on the roads.
