Tenkodogo:A total of 5,472,000 CFA francs in fines were collected and 94 vehicles impounded for helmet violations between October 1 and 4, 2026, as part of Operation "Head Shield." This update was shared by François Sawadogo, the regional director of the National Police for Nakamb, during a press briefing.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the enforcement of helmet-wearing regulations began on October 1, 2026, following directives from the authorities. The operation is ongoing with no specified end date.
Commissioner Sawadogo highlighted the fixed fine of 3,000 CFA francs per motorcycle for non-compliance. Offenders must pay this fine and present a protective helmet to reclaim their vehicles. He underscored that the initiative aims to save lives, urging proper helmet use by all road users.
The helmet requirement applies universally, including to children on motorcycles. Sawadogo assured that price controls are being monitored by the National Police in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce, with toll-free numbers available for reporting price gouging.
Initial findings suggest a decrease in offenses, indicating growing compliance. The operation also targets other Highway Code violations, with the ultimate goal of making helmet use a standard practice to mitigate traffic accident injuries.
