World Refugee Day Commemorated in Ouahigouya under Socioeconomic Integration Theme

Ouahigouya: World Refugee Day (WRD) was commemorated on Saturday, June 20, 2026, in the City of Naaba Kango in Ouahigouya, Burkina Faso, focusing on socioeconomic integration. The event was chaired by Minister Delegate in charge of Regional Cooperation, Bªbgnasgnan Stella Eldine Kabr©/Kabor©, representing the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Burkina Faso.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the theme for the 2026 commemoration was "Reception and social cohesion: how to strengthen ties between refugees and host populations for better socio-economic integration in Burkina Faso." Fatoumata Nacoumana, representing refugees in the Yaadga region, expressed gratitude to the Burkinab¨ people for their hospitality amidst the security challenges. She urged the international community to enhance assistance for the integration and well-being of refugees.

The patron of the 2026 edition, Mahamadi Bangr© Ou©draogo, President of ADES-Nord, represented by Salifou Sodr©, emphasized the need for economic empowerment of refugees. He called on the private sector to incorporate refugees into the economic framework, noting that "every life welcomed is a treasure and every family protected is a victory for humanity."

UNHCR Resident Representative in Burkina Faso, Maurice Azonnankpo, highlighted the importance of promoting coexistence, investing in sustainable solutions, and supporting the voluntary, dignified, and safe return of the 44,921 refugees and asylum seekers in Burkina Faso.

Deputy Minister Kabr© noted the significance of the commemoration for Burkina Faso, which "better understands the pain of displacement." She stressed the importance of shared humanity and responsibility, and the role of refugees' obligations in fostering peaceful coexistence, reaffirming the country's commitment to supporting vulnerable populations.

The ceremony included awarding prizes to winners of sporting events like cycling and football, organized as part of the commemoration. Authorities also visited exhibition stands of the Yaadga refugees, marking the conclusion of the World Refugee Day events in Ouahigouya.

The ceremony was held under the patronage of the Minister of Territorial Administration and Mobility, attended by the Governor of the Yaadga region, Thomas Yampa, and delegations from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UNHCR.
