Actors Engage in Evaluation System for Transparency in Burkina Faso’s Extractive Sector

Yaadga: As a prelude to the evaluation of the contribution of actors to the transparency of the extractive sector in 2026, the Permanent Secretariat of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (SP/EITI-BF) organized an awareness-raising session on Monday for administrative authorities, representatives of local authorities, civil society organizations, and media outlets in Yatenga, the AIB noted.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the general objective of this activity is to raise awareness among the populations in local authorities on the evaluation of the contribution of actors to the transparency of the extractive sector. This evaluation aims to strengthen transparency in the extractive sector, establish a culture of accountability, improve the social responsibility of actors, and strengthen social cohesion in mining areas, said the representative of the SP/EITI, Amara Bitili.

The 2nd Vice-President of the special communal delegation of Ouahigouya, Rasmane Tiendrebeogo, in his speech at the opening of the session, suggested that the EITI offers an opportunity for local actors to express their views on the governance of the mining sector and to learn about the evaluation system and how the population will participate.

Through two papers, the participants appropriated the evaluation criteria, the collection method, the public evaluation guide, and raised concerns about the structure and contribution of the extractive industries to the economy of Burkina Faso.

As a reminder, Burkina Faso joined the EITI standard in 2008 with the aim of improving the governance of the mining sector so that it contributes to the country’s sustainable development. After making remarkable efforts to comply with transparency requirements in the sector, the country obtained a moderate score of 75.5/100 in September 2023 in the implementation of the 2019 EITI standard.
