Burkina Faso’s Newspapers Focus on Sports Expenses and Drug Seizure

Ouagadougou: The Burkinabe daily newspapers have turned their attention to two significant issues this Wednesday: a substantial seizure of amphetamines valued at 170 million CFA francs and the financial implications of international matches played by the national football team, the Stallions.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the public daily Sidwaya reported on a recent session of the Transitional Legislative Assembly where Roand Somda, the Minister in charge of Sport, addressed the deputies. The focus was on the management of the August 4th stadium, green spaces, and the contribution of the diaspora. Minister Somda highlighted that since the suspension of the August 4th stadium from 2020 to 2025, the Stallions A team has played an average of 14 matches annually, with each match costing approximately 500 million CFA francs.

Sidwaya also noted the recent success of the Stallions, who qualified against Tajikistan with a 2-0 victory in the U17 World Cup on Tuesday, November 11, 2025. The private newspaper Le Pays further detailed that the expenses covered logistics, transport, accommodation, catering, bonuses, stadium location, security, and communication. Minister Somda assured that the construction of a new stadium in Bobo-Dioulasso would not prevent the rehabilitation of the Sangoul Lamizana stadium.

Meanwhile, the long-established Burkinabe daily, L'Observateur Paalga, emphasized a significant operation by the National Coordination for the Fight Against Fraud. The agency seized amphetamines and alcoholic energy drinks on November 11, 2025, in Ouagadougou. The contraband was stored in a residential building, violating the laws of the pharmaceutical sector in Burkina Faso, known as the Land of Upright Men.
