Koupela: As part of the celebration of Women's Month, the spotlight is on the Teeg Wend e Association of women weavers of Tambela, in the commune of Koupela. This organization is committed to the economic empowerment of women and the promotion of indigenous culture through traditional dyeing and weaving.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the Teeg Wend e association, created in 2023, has consistently distinguished itself through its commitment to the development of women. Initially comprising only 13 members, the association has grown to include 25 women who actively engage in traditional dyeing and weaving. This growth has enabled many members to provide for their needs and contribute to family expenses.
Wango Elisabeth Baga, president of the Teeg Wend e Association, stated that the main objective is to help women feel useful and autonomous. "Our ambition is to help women learn a trade, earn a decent living, and promote our traditional know-how through weaving and dyeing," she explained.
The association received a grant of 6,842,754 CFA francs from the Cultural and Tourism Development Fund, in partnership with the Swiss Cooperation Office in Burkina Faso. This funding supports the project aimed at improving working conditions, providing production equipment, and enhancing the skills of the women involved.
Ms. Baga highlighted the benefits the community gains from this initiative, noting that it provides an income-generating activity while preserving culture through traditional weaving. Edith Nar e, a member of the association, shared how the initiative has offered her stability and support in contributing to her family's expenses.
H©l¨ne Thiombiano, another member, encouraged other women in the area to join the association to learn a trade and become self-reliant. The association's president also called for more support from local authorities and the public to continue developing opportunities for women.
Through its actions, the Teeg Wend e Association has established itself as a model of women's organization working for economic empowerment and the promotion of local cultural heritage in the commune of Koupela.
