Burkina Faso Hosts 49th International Museum Day Focusing on Global Unity

Kaya: The International Council of Museums Burkina Faso section (ICOM-Burkina) celebrated the 49th edition of International Museum Day from May 17 to 18, 2026, in Kaya, within the Kuilse region. This year's theme focused on 'Museums unite a divided world.' The event featured a comprehensive 48-hour cultural program that included visits to local dignitaries such as His Majesty Dima Sigri of Bousma and the chief of Sandbontenga, as well as panels that brought together young professionals, students, and cultural heritage experts alongside discovery visits.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Dr. Leonard Nabaloum, the chairman of the organizing committee, emphasized the dedication and responsibility involved in organizing this edition. He expressed gratitude towards the officials of ICOM-BF and the administrative and customary authorities for their unwavering support, which was instrumental in the success of the event. Dr. Nabaloum called upon the authorities to continue supporting such initiatives to promote Burkinabe culture.

Aghate Nana/Sanon, the president of ICOM-BF, highlighted that May 18 is a day dedicated to the celebration of museums, a tradition established by ICOM since 1977. She explained that this commemoration is marked by the organization of panels, conferences, workshops, and visits to tourist sites around themes chosen by the institution. Ms. Nana/Sanon urged those involved in the museum sector to reflect on this year's theme to contribute to peace in a divided world through cultural heritage.

Nedioula Babou, a Master II student at Joseph Ki-Zerbo University, commended the organizing committee's efforts for the successful 2026 edition. He noted that the initiative helps in discovering the world of museums and understanding their social role in addressing societal problems. Participant Bibata Yogo expressed her satisfaction, stating that the event was enriching and praised the panelists for effectively addressing the issues facing museums.
