Burkina Faso Koranic Teacher to Stand Trial for Alleged Cruelty Towards Student

Ouagadougou: The Burkinabe justice system is set to try a Koranic teacher on November 19 for allegedly committing acts of extreme cruelty against his 13-year-old talib (student), who failed to return with a demanded sum after a day of begging.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the Prosecutor of Faso at the High Court of Ouaga 1, Bakouli Blaise Bazi, announced the trial in a press release on Tuesday. The teacher is accused of sequestering, tying up, and depriving the young student of food during the month of October. The situation led to severe injuries, including advanced putrefaction of the boy's hands, necessitating emergency medical intervention to prevent amputation.

The judicial authority, citing the young boy, reported that the abuse resulted from his failure to return with the money demanded by his master. On November 19, the accused will face charges of kidnapping, torture, and intentional assault and battery, as specified by prosecutor Bazi.

The Prosecutor strongly condemned the acts, emphasizing that a child placed in a Koranic school for spiritual education should not be exploited or used as a source of income. He asserted that the dignity and physical integrity of every child are inviolable.
