Di©bougou: The National Bureau of Major Projects of Burkina Faso (BN-GPB) recently evaluated the 4-hectare agricultural area at the Di©bougou remand and correctional center, as part of their oversight of agricultural production efforts in the nation's correctional facilities. This visit aimed to assess the site's operational effectiveness and the overall functionality of the newly established infrastructure.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the area was developed under the Presidential Initiative for Agricultural Production and Food Self-Sufficiency (IP-P3A), featuring a 5 m³/h borehole powered by solar panels, a 5 m³ water tower, a 50 m³ pond, and a 25 m³/h booster pump for irrigation purposes. The initiative is designed to ensure food provision for inmates by engaging them in market gardening activities.
Inspector Ousseni Zabr©, director of the Di©bougou prison, stated that the project allows the cultivation of tomatoes, cabbage, and lettuce. In the previous season, the prison harvested 36 tons of tomatoes, 18 tons of cabbage, and half a ton of lettuce.
Inspector Zabr© further explained the harvest distribution policy, noting that one-third of the produce is allocated for inmate consumption, while the remaining portion is sold in the market. The proceeds from these sales are divided, with 75% deposited into a prison account and 25% distributed among the production participants.
The initiative, supported by governmental authorities, significantly enhances the prison's production capacity, infrastructure maintenance, and food supply. The monitoring mission also serves to collect feedback from beneficiaries to improve facility utilization.
