Koosin/Watermelon Cultivation: A Unique Feature in the Commune of Doumbala

Doumbala: Watermelon cultivation is a unique feature of the commune. This was observed on Saturday, November 8, 2025, in a field during the harvest. A visit to the 6-hectare watermelon field of Modou Deme, a major producer in the village of Nian, revealed a massive production. Indeed, harvesting watermelons requires the presence of about thirty men and women. Using basins and carts, the workers are busy harvesting, making large piles, sometimes under trees to facilitate collection. In Mr. Deme's field, farmgate prices are negotiated between producers and buyers, and trucks will be available for loading.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Modou Deme, who has been one of the first watermelon producers in Nian for over twenty years, mentions that the prices of watermelons initially were low, selling at 125 CFA francs per unit. He notes that these prices have evolved to vary between 150 CFA francs and 350 CFA francs. The producer assures that in 2023, he obtained two large truckloads, and in 2024, three and a half truckloads. He explains that he earns approximately 450,000 CFA francs per load.

For Modou Deme, growing watermelons allows him to pay for his children's schooling as well as medical expenses. The producer cites challenges such as poor soil, a lack of suitable equipment, frequent infestations of rodent insects causing watermelons to rot, and inaccessible roads. Despite these difficulties, Modou Deme remains hopeful that peace will return to Faso and wishes the authorities a long life so that together they can achieve food self-sufficiency.
