Niamey: The Nigerien government has announced the compilation of "substantial documentation" regarding the attempted destabilization that took place on the night of August 28-29, 2026, at Base 101 in Niamey. The government indicated that it reserves the right to pursue action before international justice, as stated in a communiqu© from the Council of Ministers on Friday, September 4, 2026.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the attempt was allegedly orchestrated by elements of the Special Intelligence Battalion within the Special Operations Command, specifically at Base 101 in Niamey. The government emphasized that Niger is not at war with any country and does not harbor such intentions, while specifying that documentation has been compiled concerning what it describes as "aggression."
The Council of Ministers claimed that the operation had "international ramifications" and attributed it to a network of collusion, accusing the French regime of playing a central role. It views this action as part of a series of initiatives aimed at "undermining the will" of the Nigerien people in favor of sovereignty and greater control over natural resources.
The government also criticized certain African actors for their alleged roles as "gateways" for destabilizing actions. However, it maintained that these maneuvers "will always fail," highlighting the determination of the defense and security forces and the mobilization of the population.
The Council of Ministers acknowledged the mobilization of social forces and the patriotic momentum demonstrated in support of the defense and security forces, with the Presidential Guard taking a leading role. The government extended its condolences to the families of civilian and military victims and wished a speedy recovery to those injured.
Furthermore, gratitude was expressed to countries showing solidarity with Niger, including member states of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), Algeria, and Russia. The statement also urged the Ulema and the population to strengthen prayers, particularly "Al Qunut," alongside maintaining vigilance and citizen watch in light of the threats mentioned by the government.
