Presidential Initiative Empowers Displaced Woman In Bankui

Dedougou: Torn from her village of Soro in the commune of Gassan after a terrorist attack in January 2022, Adja Sanogo and her family sought refuge in Dedougou, in the Bankui Region. She is now learning the craft of weaving through a presidential empowerment program, enabling her to contribute financially to her family's needs.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Adja Sanogo, who was internally displaced due to terrorism, is gradually rebuilding her life by engaging in weaving, a new income-generating activity that offers her financial autonomy. Upon arriving in Dedougou, she faced economic challenges, such as the scarcity of firewood and the high cost of inputs, which hindered her ability to continue traditional shea butter production. In search of work, she scoured neighborhoods daily to support her family.

During this period, the Presidential Initiative for the Empowerment of Internally Displaced Women provided a beacon of hope. Adja enrolled in the program's inaugural launch in the Mouhoun province, choosing to train in Faso Danfani weaving. Known for its blend of tradition, creativity, and economic potential, this craft quickly became her livelihood. Her dedication and capacity for learning allowed her to master the techniques necessary for creating the iconic Burkinabe fabric. Upon completing the training, participants received looms to start their businesses, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Adja.

Now settled at home, Adja Sanogo weaves bright pagnes, or wraparound skirts, which she sells to sustain her family and regain her financial independence. Grateful for the government's initiative, she feels she has regained dignity, stability, and hope. Each day, she witnesses the transformative impact of weaving on her life and aspires to expand her workshop, contributing to the promotion of Faso Danfani, a symbol of Burkinabe creativity.

Adja Sanogo's journey exemplifies resilience, proving that even amid adversity, internally displaced women can rebuild and actively participate in the local economy when given opportunities.
