Bobo-dioulasso: Saturin Yameogo, representing the Association of Young Cyclists of Koudougou (AJCK), emerged victorious in the first edition of the Faso Tourism Cycling Grand Prix held in Bama. Yameogo completed the 90.5 km course in 2 hours, 15 minutes, and 52 seconds.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the event featured 57 riders from 13 clubs competing over 11 laps on a closed circuit in Bobo-Dioulasso before concluding in Bama. The top ten finishers were awarded prizes, with Yameogo receiving a trophy, a check for 500,000 FCFA, and additional prizes for his first-place finish.
Micaila Rawende of AS Bessel secured second place, while Alassane Ouattara from Makaba Club de Banfora finished third. They received checks for 300,000 FCFA and 200,000 FCFA, respectively, alongside promotional items.
Present at the finish line, Pindgwende Gilbert Ouedraogo, the Minister of Communication, Culture, Arts, and Tourism, highlighted the cycling race as a significant innovation of the 4th edition of the Great Domestic Tourism Season. He emphasized the race's role in fostering a synergy between sport and tourism to promote the national tourism heritage.
The initiative aims to support cycling, a key sport in Burkina Faso, and leverage events like the internationally recognized Tour du Faso. The minister noted that cycling allows riders to explore various localities and visit tourist sites, thus enhancing tourism.
Ouedraogo urged Burkinabe citizens to support the initiative by exploring their country and reviving tourism sites that have reopened following efforts to reclaim the territory. He emphasized the importance of domestic tourism alongside international visitors.
The event concluded with the minister receiving an honorary trophy for his dedication to promoting tourism in Burkina Faso. The Burkinabe Cycling Federation, the riders, and event partners were also commended for their contributions to the successful event.
